Beautiful Hidden Gem BUT VERY RELIGIOUS

The land is very fertile for growing, lots of ground water, streams and creeks, plus pines and regular seasons! We got some acreage and grow all the vegetables we want, and were lucky to get 3 types of fruit trees and wild huckleberries too! People should be warned… ST Maries is the most religious and conservative area in the entire panhandle!!! It’s like how America was 100 years ago in terms of values and traditions. Families will live in camper just to stay here, and no homelessness, there’s always a helping hand but you need to share in the values here or you won’t enjoy the area no matter how hard you try. The town and surrounding country side and mountains changes for no one. Come for a visit all you want, but please keep moving North to the modern busy and stressful world, or way South to Boise where I hear they are open minded to all world views over there – not here. The North in general is conservative and that’s a fact, but ST Maries has traditions and values from generations back and is stubborn, and open armed if you are the same way, and closed armed if you are not. Buyers beware, don’t come here if you want to be around modern thinking secular people, this is a very, very religious town and area!!!!

Great Place to Raise a Family

The Bible says that if you turn a blind eye on the poor, then you turn a blind eye to God. Saint Maries is filled with wonderful and kind people, many who are poor and some very poor. Raising my children around less fortunate families and not isolating them in a ritsy suburbs around other upper middle class families has resulted in them having compassion and tolerance, and above all, grace – a thing that is in very rare supply. My eldest is 23 and she just got engaged to a man from a wealthy family; her fiance and his family love her graciousness and intelligence. My 15 year old knows how to fix up old cars and even helped a friend’s family build their home, so he will be a wonderful handy man someday for his own family, and he has skills that his own father who recently retired as an engineer couldn’t teach him, and so in edition to being smart like his dad, he also fixes our cars and does other handy work! It’s a strong community here, likely not a place that attracts those who profess tolerance but don’t want to get to know or be around those less fortunate than themselves. When we came here nearly 20 years ago it was much more destitute, but still with a lot of middle class and 2 or 3 upper middle class families. These days a lot of upper middle class and wealthy families are moving in, some have said for retirement, and others to raise their families. Our annual fairs and celebrations always seem to have a few new faces each year, and I’ve made many friends with newcomers in the last few years that are from all walks of life. There is no other place that I can think of that I would want to have raised my children, so I’m very fortunate to have done so here.

After my husband’s passing in 2010 my eldest daughter and I moved to Saint Maries just outside of town up the pass. We joined a local church, and together started building a homestead that Jim always wanted and talked about, complete with livestock, our own well and a garden. Volunteering in Saint Maries and at our church, and creating the life that Jim and I wanted together has helped me feel closer to him. I feel we are a close knit community here in Saint Maries, and it’s the only place I know that still has those old-fashioned values like kindness, manners, and looking out for one another.
