Stuck in the mundane

I was born and raised in Joplin and am still a current resident for 32 years. Joplin now has a high crime rate and LOTS of marijuana issues pretty much wherever you live in Joplin. Joplin’s schools (especially the high school) are not very good. Joplin is a place where you come to live and can’t get out of because you can’t afford anything else. It is not uncommon to know everyone/everyone be connected in some way because everyone gets stuck here. There is NOTHING to do besides go to the run-down mall or to the park. There are walking trails which are great and all, but I prefer not to get mugged or raped as I’m walking trails and ALL of the trails that Joplin has are no exception to that. There is one trail in the middle of Joplin that is in the open that I do feel more safe at, but it is BORING to walk on (just a gravel trail on a flat piece of open land). Joplin has a splash pad, but it is no bigger than a bedroom, but it is free which is nice for families. The “water park” that Joplin has is to expensive for a glorified public pool. Joplin doesn’t take care of the parks bathrooms and park equipment (it’s all nasty, broken, or again – I feel like I’ll get raped or mugged in the bathrooms). Joplin is cheaper than a lot of places, and if you live on the outskirts of Joplin, it’s not as bad; but, honestly, there is nothing to do in Joplin. “The Falls” and Wildcat Glades that Joplin prides itself on are pretty, but I wouldn’t go unless you want to be mugged (especially in the evening). Most places during the day are ok, but I still wouldn’t walk the trails without a couple people with me and a fully charged cell phone, just in case. Teens go to Walmart or the mall to play around because there is not really anything else for them to do/place to go. People are poor, but no one wants to work. I will say, however, when Joplin goes through a disaster/tragedy, everyone does help each other out and takes care of each other. BUT it shouldn’t take a tragedy/disaster to do that. You have both types of people here: pull yourself up by your bootstraps and people who take advantage of the government funds. Joplin is good if you don’t want much for your life, if you like to be bored, but there is no opportunity here and people get stuck in a rut that they can’t get out of because you don’t make enough money to do/go anywhere else. Most people go to Branson, MO or Eureka Springs, AR for their honeymoons because of lack of money if that tells you anything (whoop de doo). I do love Joplin, but I wish that the sleepy town would wake up and take care of issues/listen to the people with a head on their shoulders to make better choices. In short: Joplin’s only “affordable” housing is apartments which have a big marijuana/safety issues and Joplin has NO opportunities to grow career wise and nothing to do.
