Don’t move here unless you like going backwards
Here’s what you get when you move to Onalaska, Texas:
Backwards people
There’s one road (90) that cuts through Onalaska that will take you to Huntsville one way and Livingston the other way. I recommend Huntsville over Livingston: Huntsville has great shopping, lots of really cool little boutiques and antique shops, tons of restaurants and better grocery stores with better prices than here in Onalaska. Example: you can get 2 bunches of green onions for .98 at HEB in Huntsville and Livingston. You can get 1 bunch of green onions for $1.90 at Brookshires in Onalaska. Livingston is a bigger version of Onalaska and it consistently makes the list of cities with the worst crime in Texas.
Crumbling infrastructure
Lots of accidents. I lived in other places and seldom, if ever, heard a siren…here it’s everyday.
Swimming pool sized potholes and terrible roads that it takes an act of God to get repaired
1 local grocery store (Brookshires) that charges astronomical prices for everything
Local government is a joke
Local police department is a joke
Although there are local ordinances (like noise) the police and mayor’s office do absolutely nothing to enforce them.
The city counsel are only concerned with tax revenue and bringing more money into town.
Absurdly high property taxes
Methheads are everywhere
Drunk rednecks in trucks everywhere
Drunk drivers everywhere
Terrible drivers who interpret speed limit signs as suggestions and not laws
Other than fishing and getting drunk or high, there’s nothing to do in Onalaska
The local schools should all receive no higher than a C- rating
There’s trash everywhere and the ordinance for dumping trash is yet another ordinance that’s not enforced
The overall lack of intelligence among the local gentry
Chaserz on the Lake: avoid it at all costs unless you like waiting 2 hours for overcooked, overpriced food. PS: the owners are rude and rotten.
PSS: the “lodge” located next to and owned by the same sphincter muscles who own Chaserz is more like a housing project and less like a lodge or hotel. The rooms are really basic and ugly but they do have kitchen-type areas in the rooms. You deserve to skip this place.
The RV parks, RV Resort on Lake Livingston and On the Lake RV Resort, are your two best choices for RV stays. Avoid the so-called “rv park” at Chaserz. It’s run-down and full of people who live there long term.
RV Resort on the lake has a boat house and both resorts have amenities. The crap rv park at Chaserz has zero amenities…except for the restaurant that takes forever to get your overcooked, overpriced food to you
Sonic and Subway are the 5-star restaurant choices in Onalaska. The 2 Mexican restaurants in town are both pretty bad. Jerry’s restaurant is ok…it’s the best restaurant in town and the menu consists mostly of typical American gut busting comfort food…you know, things you can cook at home.
Lots of gas stations, a few churches, 2 dollar stores, 1 auto parts store and a couple of small resale boutiques that charge an arm and a leg for used clothing and whatever other items they sell. Oh yes, 1 pawn shop. That’s it for shopping in the sprawling metropolis of Onalaska, Texas.
I have lived in this one-horse town for 3 years and I hate it. I am here to take care of my mother. Otherwise, I wouldn’t live in this weird social inbreeding experiment. I look forward to the day Onalaska, Texas is in my rear view mirror. There are many small towns in Texas that are idyllic, clean, with friendly, intelligent people. Go there because you won’t like it here…unless you’re a backwards kind of person. If you are…Welcome Home!
